Minister of Homeland Security Fred Matiang’i has described in detail how Kenyan lawyer Miguna Miguna can regain his citizenship and return to the country.
Fred Matiang’i said Miguna needed to complete a one-page document as stipulated in the new constitution to restore his citizenship.
In an interview with NTV on Sunday, April 17, Matiang’i noted that Miguna needed to complete a one-page document as stipulated in the new constitution regarding the process of restoring a person’s citizenship, which applies to everyone.
The minister added that Miguna lost his citizenship in accordance with the old constitution which barred Kenyans from becoming citizens of more than one country.
Matiang’i also cited accusations against his Ministry for ignoring court orders as alleged by some politicians, noting that they are governed by the law in carrying out their duties.
there are two court decisions on how you can restore it after losing it in the previous Constitution as you were barred from having dual citizenship, when the new Constitution was drafted the process was made law how you can restore it.
“You have to fill out a form or paperwork to get your citizenship back to normal. Since then more than 300,000 Kenyans have obtained their citizenship. It is as easy as filling out a one-page document,” the minister told NTV.
questioned Miguna’s reasons for not following the procedure
The minister also wondered why Miguna did not follow the prescribed procedure as stipulated in the country’s law to return his Kenyan passport.
“We have opened immigration offices around the world including CanadaAsk yourself this question, ‘What’s so significant about a single piece of paper?’
Matiang’i’s statement is following the lawyer’s attempt to return to Kenya to provoke a series of riots after his dismissal from the country on February 6, 2018.
Miguna was ousted after swearing in ODM leader Raila Odinga as People’s President at Uhuru Park, Nairobi.
after filing a petition in court, the Supreme Court ruled that his dismissal was illegal and unconstitutional.
Miguna tried to return to the country on March 26, 2018 but his efforts were thwarted after he was barred from entering the country when he landed at JKIA Stadium.
he made his second attempt in January 2020, where he was denied the right to travel to Kenya when he arrived in Germany. This is after the government warned him.
in November 2021, his return to the country also hit a snag after claiming that the government had issued a warning about his entry into the country.
