Nairobi County Speaker, Benson Mutura, was charged with fraud where he included his name in a list of traveling officers but was not going anywhere.
The court sued Mutura for a loss of KSh 5.3 million since he was employed by the county government.
Mutura denied the allegations, saying the case was politically motivated by his support for Deputy President William Ruto.
Nairobi County Speaker Benson Mutura has been charged with embezzling KSh 5 million from City Hall.

Mutura, who was arraigned before Senior Mount Chief Magistrate, Esther Kimilu on Friday, April 22, was charged with fraudulently stealing county funds on several occasions.

On a separate date between February 1, 2021 and February 28, 2022 in Nairobi City County, the speaker of the county assembly stole KSh 5,348,984 property belonging to the Nairobi County Government while on duty, “said part of the court indictment.

Through his lawyer Dancan Okach, Mutura claimed his arrest and indictment were politically motivated as he supported Deputy President William Ruto and the UDA party.

“If you go through the gate of the vice president’s office in Karen, you will be prosecuted, “argued lawyer Okach.

According to the indictment, Mutura is facing charges of illegally robbing public servants.

He is alleged to have committed the offense on a different date between February 1, 2021, and February 28, 2022, in Nairobi County.

The speaker’s lawyer asked the court to release him, claiming his arrest was a shameful act.

Judge Kamilu granted the request and released the former MP on a KSh 500,000 cash bond and a KSh 1 million bond.

The judge said the case would be heard again on May 16, 2022.

Corruption cases in the Nairobi county legislature have escalated since the city government came to power in 2013.

In 2021, DCI officers stormed the office of acting secretary Jairus Musumba who jumped out of a window while causing havoc in the county offices.
