The residents of Nyeri County on Thursday 2022-06-30 took to the street in a peaceful demonstration over the high cost of living in the country in recent times.
During the demonstrations, the protesters maintained that they would not participate in the coming general elections if the government did not move with speed to curb the current economic menace which has left many families starving.
According to one of the protesters Miss Ashas Njama who spoke to a group of journalists, many families especially in the slums cannot manage to put a decent meal on the table three times a day and this has now affected them even medically.
“We people in the slums are not getting the right food at the right time. We have children in the house; we have the old and even the disabled however we cannot feed them because of the hard times. This is the reason why we are now urging the government to look into the economic issue because if this continues like this then we will not even participate in the coming elections,” said Miss Asha.
Asha also claimed that the kind of starvation they have witnessed in recent times has also affected people’s health.
“You know we are also taking care of relatives with health conditions like cancer and diabetes and a person suffering from diabetes cannot survive without food,” asserted Asha.
Perhaps the protest in Nyeri is just a tip of an iceberg because many Kenyans have since expressed distress in so many ways. The price of maize flour and most foodstuffs have since skyrocketed and it is something that seems to have affected Kenyans of low income a great deal.
Apart from Kenya, there have also been similar protests in foreign countries like Ghana and UK in the recent time and this is perhaps an indication of a world economic crisis.
