Nairobi Gets New Police Commander To Replace Ex-Boss Who Was Suspended After A Bungled Operation

James Mugera has been confirmed as the new Nairobi County Police Commander in the latest changes at the National Police Service.

Mugera has been serving in an acting capacity for the last few months following the suspension of Augustine Nthumbi last December.

Nthumbi was sent on a compulsory leave following a botched police operation at Mukuru kwa Njenga slums in the capital city. He has since been recalled to Vigilance House, awaiting redeployment.

His elevation to County Commander position came a double blessing for Mugera, who has also been elevated to the rank of Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police.

Before his elevation to the deputy Nairobi County Police Commander, Mugera served as Nthumbi’s deputy. Previously, he was the Kilifi County police boss.

Prior to his posting to the Coastal county, Mugera served as Kericho County Police Commander. And now as the man in-charge of the security of over 3 million people in the capital, Mugera is the man to watch as the country gears towards the August 9 general election.

This comes at the time the National Police Service has promoted over 200 senior police officers to top ranks in readiness for the August 9 general election. Among those promoted, 10 have climbed to the rank of Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police.
