The Murang’a County government has urged residents to be careful when ordering pickles at food outlets as a precaution against the outbreak of cholera.
“This notice includes pickles sold by food vendors. Do not eat fruits before washing them well with clean water. even the vegetables you buy… be careful,” said the Department of Water, Environment and Waste through a statement sent on Saturday.
Pickles usually consist of uncooked tomatoes, onions and peppers and are preferred with meat, boiled eggs, sausages and chips (French fries)
The director of the Department, Mary Magochi said “we have been advised by the department in charge of public health to be more careful as the cholera epidemic has already broken out in the neighboring County of Kiambu.”
“The Department of Public Health has now warned us against eating fresh food unless we know exactly where it came from and the safety measures used,” said Mrs. Magochi.
She said that fruit and vegetable sellers endanger the health of customers by selling them harvests loaded with toxic residues that are not destroyed due to the spraying of chemicals that kill insects and diseases.
” Mostly involved in crop theft are the most dangerous in our markets. Agents and wholesalers can help us close this dangerous gap. These pickles are offered in these markets,” she said.
Cholera is an infection caused by eating a type of bacteria known as Vibrio cholerae found in contaminated water or food and is mainly associated with a lack of clean water.
