Kakamega senator Boni Khalwale had a hard time addressing the mourners at the memorial service after some of them began to humiliate him.
Khalwale was defending the national government in his address to mourners on Saturday when a section started to shout ” uongo” to him.
The senator was among the senior leaders who attended the funeral service of Maendeleo Democratic Party member Joseph Amisi Omukanda-Shiyenga in Navakholo, Kakamega County.
Amisi was the brother of the Secretary General of Higher Education Beatrice Inyangala.
The senator became angry after trying to defend the Finance Bill 2023.
Khalwale had criticized some of the leaders who spoke in front of him saying that they were misleading the crowd about the tax issue when the commotion started.
“Regarding the issue of taxes, you should know that anyone who tells you that taxes have been increased is misleading. The budget bill will be read next month. That is the truth,” he said.
As soon as he finished speaking, the crowd began to shout”uongo” repeatedly.
“Uongo, Uongo ” a voice was heard from the crowd as others told him to return to his seat.
The deejay had to play music to stop the heckling that escalated.
Khalwale later asked the Deejay to stop the music and continued his speech.
“As the greatest leader in Kakamega, I have to tell my people the truth so that they know where the nation is headed,” he said amid murmurs.
The mourners did not give up.
The ‘Uongo ‘ noises continued even as he insisted on addressing them.
“I agree that the cost of living at the moment is very high. But what the leaders should discuss is how they will work to reduce the cost of living,”
he continued even as the mourners increased their antics.
