Families of Mukumu Girls students who died from food poisoning to receive 400k sh from the Government.

Minister of Education Ezekiel Machogu has announced every family that lost their child in an outbreak of a terrible food poisoning at Mukumu girls’ school in Kakamega, will receive 400, 000 from the government to comfort them.

Speaking before the senate committee, Machogu said the ministry also managed the cost of treatment for 109 students admitted to various hospitals in the country.

“I would like to say that our ministry paid for the treatment of 109 students who were admitted to various hospitals and the families of the students who died will receive 400,000 shillings for each student and we are monitoring that to be achieved in the next few days,” Machogu said.

Machogu confirmed 1,962 students have reported to school after being closed for five weeks following a wave of illnesses in the institution.

He said 44 students have not yet reported while the other 56 have requested to be transferred to other educational institutions following the outbreak of the disease.

Machogu arrived before the senate just one week after Nation newspaper made a story about how Mukumu’s students ate spoiled food, in what was found to be intentional.

According to the long-time cook of the school, the head teacher who was replaced early in April by minister Machogu forced him to cook the food despite his refusal saying that it was not suitable for human consumption due to the bad taste the food had.
