Paul Mackenzie brought to court after being detained for 30 days.

The pastor of the Good News International church, Paul Mackenzie, has been brought to the Shanzu Court in Mombasa today, Friday, June 2, 2023. where the prosecution requests he be detained for 60 more days.

In the request for an extension of time, the prosecution says it has not yet concluded the investigation and they need more time.

“A 60-day detention is the shortest possible time that an investigation can be completed under the current circumstances and is the least effective means of maintaining the integrity of a weak investigation,” read court papers.

They claim that there is no change in the release status of Mackenzie and 17 other suspects since the court’s decision on May 10 when they were detained.

“There are still compelling reasons to deny bail until the investigation is complete and there is a strong possibility of serious charges against the suspects,” court documents read.

So far, the bodies of more than 243 people have been examined in the morgue of Malindi General Hospital in Kilifi County.

Many are those whose bodies were exhumed from the graves that DCI officers found in Shakahola forest.
