People found guilty of a fatal train accident in eastern India will be “severely punished”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said.
About 288 people died and about 1,000 others were injured in an incident on Friday evening in the state of Odisha, involving two passenger trains and a freight train.
Rescue efforts have been completed, with officials saying all stranded and injured passengers have been found.
Modi visited the scene, terming the incident as “horrific”.
He also met the victims of the accident at the hospital, and vowed that his government would do everything possible to “take care of the injured”.
It is still unclear what caused the collision of the trains in Balasore district, which has been described as the worst railway accident in India this century.
