Members of Parliament under Azimio- One Kenya Coalition Party are now threatening to impeach Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetangula.
The MPs said on Thursday they will present a motion impeachment in Parliament next week if the Speaker fails to comply with their decision to remove MP Sabina Chege as Deputy Leader of the Minority.
“We have decided that first of all to bring the motion to impeach the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula,” said Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi.
“We are preparing a motion, which will be ready by Tuesday next week, and we will be asking him based on the practice that he introduces that point so that we impeach him as soon as possible.”
The MPs were talking outside Parliament a few minutes after the speaker suspended the session for 15 minutes following the chaos that arose regarding his decision to keep Chege in the position.
Ugunja member of parliament accused the Speaker of being undermined after joining Kenya Kwanza administration, thus claiming he is not fit to hold the position.
“This Parliament cannot be run in the way it is run to achieve the results that should be achieved. we think it is under bad leadership,” Ugunja Member of Parliament added.
According to Azimio MPs, Wetangula’s failure to topple Chege and appoint Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje is a sabotage to their coalition and a conspiracy to force leadership.
“The main issue is because of the decision that has been made by the speaker, not now but he has shown signs in the past that he will use the majority to impose leadership on Minority,” Kathiani Member of Parliament Robert Mbui said.
Mbui, who is also the Deputy Minority Leader, described Chege’s refusal to leave office as ‘immoral and disgusting’, saying they cannot allow the majority dictate to them about leadership of their Council.
“We have decided who we want. it is not logical and ethical for anyone to claim that she wants to sit in an office where she cannot work; if anything, that is the most unethical thing anyone can do.” said Mbui.
He added: “Why would you want to continue receiving an allowance from an office that you will not own anyway? It is sad and disgusting and that is why we have a problem, we will not allow majority to continue dictating to us; handle their members and let us handle ours.”
The speaker however decided Sabina Chege will continue to serve as deputy minority leader.
