Landlord cut off tenant’s fingers over Ksh500 in Kisii.

Police in Masaba South area in Kisii on Sunday launched a manhunt of a ‘mischievous’ landlord who on Friday night attacked a student tenant and chopped off his fingers.

Small County Police Chief Samuel Gitau told Reporters that his officers were following important leads while intensifying the search for the fugitive.

“We are not resting, in any case, we have increased the search,” he said on the phone.

The landlord fled immediately after beating Newton Nyabuto, a student at Keroka Technical Institute, more than 500 arrears of rent.

The student is in his second year of college studying mechanical engineering.

Nyabuto said he had gone somewhere and returned on Friday evening when the landlord confronted him about the arrears.

“I had already paid Sh2000 and I promised to finish the rest when I came back, then when I told him to give me two days to finish, he took me out with a machete and when I was struggling to leave, he cut my fingers,” Nyabuto told reporters on Sunday.

Friday’s incident quickly raised concerns as students vandalized the homeowner’s property.

Gitau said one of the suspect’s houses was vandalized by angry students who had vowed to avenge the attack on their own.
