Tragedy as 5 students and driver perish in an accident in Kaburengu, along webuye-eldoret road.

Five students from Ebenezer Academy School in Busia County died on Saturday evening after the school bus they were traveling in was involved in an accident.

The accident happened in Kaburengu, near Webuye town, the police report submitted at the Matete police station in Kakamega county said.

The school bus is said to have been hit by a Mercedes Benz traveling from Eldoret to Webuye town.

The driver of the Mercedes Benz fled the scene and the police have launched a manhunt.

The five – four girls and one boy – died instantly.

Their bodies were taken to the Webuye County Hospital mortuary.

“It transpired that the unidentified driver who fled the scene was driving a Mercedes Benz from Eldoret direction towards Webuye and while at Chimoi, he lost control of the said vehicle and hit the bus,” the police said.

Due to the impact, four girls and a boy were seriously injured and passed away.

The 48-year-old school bus driver also died on the spot.

Six other students were injured and are receiving treatment at the Webuye county hospital.

Two teachers were also injured and are in hospital receiving treatment.

“The bodies of the deceased students have been taken to the Webuye Hospital mortuary awaiting identification and examination.

Efforts are ongoing to arrest the driver who ran away,” the police said in a statement.
