Rhoda Maweu, the wife of suspected cult leader Paul Mackenzi, has been granted a Sh600,000 bond by the Shanzu Magistrate Court in the Shakahola deaths case.
She had been in custody for 62 days since her arrest on May 2.
Shanzu Senior Principal Magistrate Yusuf Shikanda ruled that the State failed to provide sufficient evidence for holding Rhoda Maweu along with her husband and 28 others in connection with the Shakahola deaths.
As a result, Rhoda Maweu has been released on a Sh100,000 personal bond and an additional Sh500,000 as surety. She is required to report to any police station when summoned.
However, Paul Mackenzi and 16 other co-accused individuals, who were arrested between April 15 and May 2, will remain in custody for another 30 days.
Additionally, the court granted the State’s request to hold the suspects for 60 days starting from June 2. However, the 11 additional suspects, who were initially arraigned on June 3, will only be held for three more days.
The State will need to provide justifiable reasons for their continued detention after spending 30 days in police and prison custody.
