Eyes turn to CJ Koome after High Court rules on suspension of Finance Bill 2023

The High Court refused to overturn an earlier judgment that stated the implementation of the Finance Act 2023.

This means that petitions challenging the constitutionality of the Finance Bill will continue. Milimani High Court Justice Mugure Tande said Kenyans would be unfairly taxed, which could be considered illegal.

She pointed out that temporarily suspending the law is in the public interest and that extending the suspension will not harm the government.

The Finance Bill 2023, which was assented to by President William Ruto on June 26, has been challenged by Senator Okia Omtata.Following the judgment of Judge Mugure Thande, the case will now be referred to the panel of judges of the President of the Supreme Court, Martha Koome, who will examine the case and make a decision.

This is a blow to President Ruto, who is looking forward to faster implementation of his first Finance Bill 2023 to fulfill some of his campaign promises.

Government through Justin Muturi announced that the extension of the moratorium on the 2023 Finance Bill will result in a government shutdown.
