Government Withdraws Security Detail from Key Azimio Leaders, Including Mama Ngina Kenyatta

In preparation for planned anti-government protests scheduled to begin on today, the Kenyan government has withdrawn the security detail assigned to prominent leaders of the Azimio La Umoja Party.

Among the leaders affected by the security withdrawal are Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Mwangi wa Iria, and Wycliffe Oparanya, along with more than 50 Azimio MPs.

The decision has raised concerns, particularly after Raila Odinga voiced apprehensions about potential harm to Azimio leaders during the demonstrations.

Additionally, four Nyanza governors, namely Gladys Wanga of Homa Bay, James Orengo of Siaya, Prof Anyang Nyong’o of Kisumu, and Ochilo Ayacko of Migori, have been directed to report their security personnel to Kisumu ahead of countrywide mass demonstrations lasting three days.

Notably, Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi expressed frustration over the security recall, stating that over 50 MPs affiliated with Azimio had also been affected, despite the withdrawal and perceived intimidation, Azimio MPs held a Parliamentary Group meeting, reaffirming their determination to proceed with the planned protests in protest of the high cost of living.

To address the situation, top police commanders in the country convened meetings at various locations, including police headquarters Vigilance House in Nairobi, DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road, and the Administration Police Training College in Embakasi.

Concerns were raised during the meetings about personnel fatigue and lack of essential anti-riot equipment, particularly tear gas canisters.

The situation remains tense as the protests draw near, and the government’s decision to withdraw security detail from key Azimio leaders, including Mama Ngina Kenyatta, has added to the complexities surrounding the demonstration.
