Al-Shabaab kills 2 people, set fire to a house in Lamu

Suspected Al-Shabaab militants carried out a terrorist attack in Lamu County on the night of Monday, August 21, killing two people.

The attackers targeted a truck along the Lamu-Witu-Garsen road in Nyongoro, and fired shots at the vehicle.

Lamu West county deputy commissioner Gabriel Kioni confirmed the incident saying the suspects escaped.

“The car was put on the road by the heavily armed militants between 6.30 am and 7 am,” he said.

“The gang fled immediately after the incident and efforts to deal with the threat are ongoing.”

The attackers had also burned about ten houses in Salama Village, Kioni said.

Witnesses and police said more than 30 heavily armed terrorists stormed the village between 8.30pm and 11pm on August 21.

The local authorities have confirmed that the terrorists also stole nine goats, televisions, solar panels and lights before fleeing to a nearby forest.

Salama village in June this year was also attacked by suspected militants who killed five people and demolished six houses.

The police said that the two were shot dead in the Nyongoro area on the Witu-Lamu highway.

The gang had stopped cars in the area and started attacking the occupants. The police arrived later and dispersed the attackers.
