Somalia bans the use of TikTok and Telegram.

Somalia has announced a ban on social networks Tiktok and Telegram and online gambling platform 1XBet.

The government says these platforms are used by “terrorists and groups involved in spreading immorality … to spread videos, images and mislead society”. This is happening while Somalia announced a major goal to destroy the al-Shabab militant group, which still controls large areas of the country, within the next five months.

Internet service providers are required to implement the ban by August 24, otherwise unspecified legal measures will be taken, said a statement from the Ministry of Communications and Technology.

A recent conference on Internet and social media safety in the capital, Mogadishu, highlighted the negative effects of online platforms on young people, including “causing some of them to lose their lives”.
