Three men suspected to be members of a criminal gang in Meru have been arrested in an ongoing operation to stamp out cases of robbery in the area.
Detectives said the three suspects are wanted for several crimes in Meru, Githongo and Nanyuki courts. The alleged crimes include murder, theft, attempted defilement and house breaking.
While the police were conducting an operation to arrest the suspects, the leader of the gang managed to escape through a hidden window in his wooden house.
“The sophisticated operation also led to the recovery of two vehicles used by the suspects to cross the county to their target areas,” the detectives said.
The detectives also noted that part of the intelligence reports show that two of the arrested suspects met earlier in the Meru GK prison while incarcerated for extortion and murder charges and have been out on bail.
According to detectives, when the suspects left custody at Meru GK prison, one of them returned to criminal activities.
“The suspect has led his gang in a series of armed robberies including the Turkwel Filling Station area in Tigania West on the night of April 24, 2023, where fuel attendants were robbed at gunpoint,” detectives said.
Detectives claimed that in the incident happened at 2 am, the victims were tied with ropes after being kicked by eight people with two AK47 guns. They then disappeared with Sh57,000 in cash and an unknown cash box.
