A court in Nairobi has convicted two social workers, Selina Adundo and Fred Leparan, of transporting three infants three years ago to Mama Lucy Kibaki hospital in Nairobi.
The court in its decision said that the prosecution has initiated a case against the suspects.
“The two knowing that they had the responsibility of raising these three children, they punished the children and therefore the two are guilty of the offense as charged,” the court said.
It was the court that found that the two acted against the ethics of social workers.
The judge further considered the BBC film, saying that it was clear from the video there was a conversation between Fred, the informant, and Rose, who pretended to be a buyer for the children.
“If Rose had one child why wouldn’t she let the other two go the way they came from?” The court held.
The court said that Fred simply decided to entrust the children to Rose against the actions and ethics of social workers.
The prosecutor told the court that between March 1, 2020, and November 16, 2020, at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Embakasi Central in Nairobi, together with others who were not before the court, they conspired to carry out the crime of human trafficking.
During the hearing of the case, one of the witnesses told the court how Fred Leparan took Ksh.300,000 from a journalist in the illegal sale of abandoned children in the hospital.
Leparan asked a woman named Rose what gender she preferred, and she replied that gender did not matter and added that she wanted a healthy child.
Leparan was asked by a BBC reporter, who pretended to be a buyer, if the child was healthy, and he replied that he was confirming his intention to steal and sell the child.
The court ordered the two detained in the industrial area and the Langata Women’s Prison pending trial in October, 2023.
