Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna wants President William Ruto to apologize to Kenyans for what he describes as lies in his campaign promises where he promised to reduce the cost of living.
”President Ruto came to power on the platform of reducing the cost of living and defending Kenyans in the bracket of low-income people he called ‘hustlers’, but a year after coming to power, Kenya is in a heated debate about the price of oil which has increased everything
Recently, he signed the Finance Act, 2023, which aims to raise taxes as the Kenya Kwanza government wants to raise more from Kenyans. His borrowing in his first year also broke the record of his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta in the previous year.” he said.
Now, Sifuna wants Ruto to come forward and apologize to Kenyans who are worried about the current situation compared to what he promised.
“When he was dealing with the cost of petrol as Deputy President, the war in Ukraine according to him had nothing to do with the cost of living, and also climate change. He had pledged to arrest corrupt government officials and the cartels. He told us that he would destroy the companies but it is now sold for more than Ksh.200. What happened to the story?” asked the senator.
“There should be some sense of responsibility. Will we see Ruto come and apologize to Kenyans that ‘I lied to you and you are fools for believing my lie?’ At the very least, they owe Kenyans an apology,” he said.
“Under the Law of Leadership and Integrity, it is an offense that should be jailed, for a public official to give false information to the public.”
The Energy and Petrol Regulatory Authority last week announced that the price of Super Petrol has now increased by Ksh.16.96, Diesel by Ksh.21.32, while Kerosene has gone up by Ksh.33.13 per litre.
The Authority’s Director General Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria said the increase was due to the weighted average cost of imported refined petroleum products.
