Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has proposed an increase in the presidential term limit from the current five years to seven.
The senator presented the proposal to the National Negotiating Committee at the Bomas of Kenya on Friday.
Parliament wants the presidential term limit to be extended to two seven-year terms.
“Extending the term of the Presidency for seven years each phase for two terms from the current five years to allow stability and practical development in the country,” he said.
He said the move will enable the President get a good opportunity to create and establish a formidable team that will issue his manifesto.
“Besides, Kenyan presidential elections are always popular due to being conducted within a short period of time making it a do-or-die event,” Cherargei notes in his proposal.
However, the proposal was met with mixed reactions from some Kenyans who expressed their different views on the X social Platform.
Captain Kipkorir said, “I do not agree with the time limit as much as I support the government of Kenya Kwanza. Other things are the same.”
Another X user, Bianca, added: “Senator, extension of the presidential term limit no.”
Juspir Mugire said the seven-year presidential term should be for one term only and be remembered easily, not procedures to remove them.
“The return of the PM should include the abolition of the presidential system. The combination has not worked anywhere. There is no need for 40 percent for the counties. Let the money follow the duties.”
Other proposals he wants are the re-establishment of the office of the Prime Minister and the creation of the Office of the Official Leader of the Opposition.
The Senator also wants the negotiation committee to discuss about parties giving 30 percent to young people, women and people with disabilities during the selection process in the General Election.
He also wants the Senate to be given the authority to veto the bills in Parliament and increase the allocation of 40 percent to the county in national income.
