Singer Bahati has recalled the frustrating times he encountered before the 2022 general election.
The father of five was one of the contenders for the Mathare parliamentary seat on the Jubilee ticket but was defeated by ODM’s Anthony Oluoch.
One of the most memorable moments is when Azimio leader Raila Odinga asked him to step down in favor of Oluoch.
At that time, only 10 days were left before Kenyans participated in the elections.
“Falling is not easy. I was leaving Naivasha knowing I would be approved. When he arrived, Baba was holding the microphone, and he said, my boy, stop competing, I will give you a job. I was like you don’t have a job and you want to give me a job, how is that possible?” he said.
“Azimio never believed in young people, William Ruto believed in me before anyone, he was the first to know this young man was running and he supported me first, but, the devil is bad.” Bahati regretted.
The artist was speaking during Chipukeezy’s show where he maintained that he is not looking for a job by running for the Mathare parliamentary seat.
According to him, he was competing to pursue other interests.
“I was given a job to resign by the previous government but I was like I have a job, there is a reason why I am running, I pay taxes, I am still one of the highest paid musicians in the country but I knew I needed to make changes. I was fighting to make changes,” he said.
And added that:
“10 days before the election which was the worst day of my life, I was held by hand and told that you will be given a job and that’s how everything changed. 10 days to election means if you only have 5 days to campaign, so there are people who have gone home knowing you are not there on the ballot. I don’t know how i got the votes, it’s a miracle. There was nothing like convincing that Baba wanted someone from ODM, not that person for help.”
He also admitted his jubilee party never supported him and he was equal to an independent candidate.
