Residents of Witeithie, Juja, Kiambu county were left stunned at the weekend after a group of hyenas killed a 10-year-old child.
The boy was in class 4 at Highway Primary School and it is said that he was walking home with his friends on Saturday evening when they were attacked by the animals.
The boy’s remains were found on Sunday morning. His bloody clothes were found by quarry workers in a nearby bush.
Residents of the area say they now live in fear and can no longer walk at night. Reports say that three hyenas were spotted on Saturday roaming in the village.
Concerned that officials of the country’s Wildlife Service (KWS) have shown laziness in controlling the situation despite numerous pleas, the locals are calling for immediate intervention to avert further crisis.
Such attacks are common in the area. Last year in September, a nine-year-old boy was mauled to death by a group of hyenas.
The incident has come just a few months after a 35-year-old man from the neighboring village of Athi was also attacked in a similar event by about eight hyenas.
Earlier, two more people were attacked by the animals in Witeithie Juja village and Thika constituency respectively.
