It is another blow to president Ruto and the government of Kenya kwanza, after the high court in Nairobi stopped the order for the launch of new digital identities.
It will be remembered a few weeks ago, Ruto announced his government will launch digital identity cards called Maisha Card from December but the court has suspended the implementation of the order until the case is heard and decided on February 6, 2024.
Judge John Chigiti ordered the government not to register people or issue identity cards to the new generation after a petition filed by the Constitutional Institute was found to be important.
“This vacation will operate to stay, prevent the implementation or further implementation by any person of the decision of the respondent of November 1, 2023 to launch or operate Maisha Namba, including digital card, digital identity, unique personal identity, and the central national Population Register, before and without a data protection impact assessment in accordance with Article 31 of the Data Protection Act,” Judge Chigiti ordered.
This is the third blow in recent days for Ruto’s leadership in court.
It will be remembered that last week the court ordered the 1.5% tax for the construction of affordable houses is illegal but ordered it will continue to be charged until early next year when the case is heard and decided.
Also on Monday, the court ordered the process of privatization of government institutions and assets to be stopped in a case that was presented by Raila Odinga through his ODM party.
