Funeral Procession Halted for Caretaker Fatally Injured by Senator Boni Khalwale’s Bull

In a surprising twist, the investigation into the death of Kizito Amukune, affectionately known as Moi and the caretaker of Senator Boni Khalwale’s bull in Kakamega, has taken an unexpected turn. Authorities have put a pause on his burial plans, stating that a second postmortem will be carried out.

The unfortunate incident occurred when Amukune was reportedly killed by the Senator’s bull during an incident on Saturday night. The initial postmortem, conducted at Kakamega General Hospital on Monday, pointed to excessive bleeding as the cause of his death.

However, on Wednesday morning, as the family sought to collect Amukune’s body for the planned burial, they were met with a hurdle. The police, responding to public complaints, denied the family access and expressed the need for a second opinion from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters in Nairobi.

Ikolomani Sub-County OCPD Benjamin Wambua clarified, “We received complaints from the public that the deceased was not killed by the bull but by a person, and we consulted the state, which is now acting on behalf of the public.” Wambua emphasized the importance of obtaining agreement from the family to thoroughly establish the cause of death without resorting to exhumation.

However, Maurice Odanga, the deceased’s father, contested this narrative, saying, “We are in agreement with the postmortem result but were shocked this morning when we went to collect the body, only for the police to show up blocking us.” Odanga expressed frustration, suggesting political motives and stressed that the family did not request a second postmortem.

“We want the police to find out who these people are blocking the burial, and yet we are his immediate kin,” Odanga pleaded, attributing the situation to political interference. He expressed grief, saying, “If people want a political fight with Khalwale and to get mileage out of it, they should sort it elsewhere. I am mourning, and if there is dissatisfaction with the autopsy report, it should be me.”

The family highlighted the financial strain incurred, having already made arrangements for the burial, including hiring a hearse, purchasing a casket, and preparing food for mourners. Senator Khalwale called for a swift investigation, urging authorities to allow the grieving family to lay their loved one to rest in peace.
