Machakos County Governor Wavinya Ndeti has strongly condemned the recent assault incident involving a Member of the County Assembly (MCA), Boniface Maeke of Kalama Ward, by county inspectorate officers. The assault resulted in the MCA sustaining a broken leg.
Maeke had attended the Machakos court in solidarity with his colleague, Douglas Musyoka of Masii/Vyulya, who was arrested on accusations related to his homestead not meeting county government regulations.
Governor Wavinya Ndeti issued a statement expressing her disapproval of the officers’ handling of the situation and the treatment of the MCA. She has ordered an immediate probe into the matter and demanded accountability for those found responsible.
“I take great exception at the humiliating treatment meted out to the leaders. I wish to reiterate my administration’s commitment to adhere to the rule of law and respect the rights of all persons, including our leaders,” part of the statement read.
The governor expects a detailed report on the incident to be submitted to her office within 7 days.
Governor Wavinya urged all county enforcement officers to act within the bounds of the law and respect the rights of residents while carrying out their duties.
Meanwhile, Machakos County Assembly Speaker Anne Kiusya voiced her concerns about the incident, emphasizing the need to safeguard the well-being and rights of MCAs nationwide. She denounced the assault, stating, “Such actions not only undermine the principles of democracy and the values that form the bedrock of our society but also pose a threat to the rule of law.”
In addition to calling for an immediate investigation, Speaker Kiusya expressed solidarity with Maeke’s family as he undergoes recovery. She emphasized the importance of upholding democratic values, justice, and the rule of law, calling on all stakeholders, including the public, to unite against acts of violence and promote a culture of tolerance and respect within democratic institutions.
The MCA, Boniface Maeke, suffered a broken ankle and was taken to the police station under the escort of Machakos OCS. He recorded a statement and was later transported to the hospital for medical attention.
