Title: Red Eye Disease Outbreak: Ministry of Health Issues Warning
Nairobi, Kenya, Feb 1 – The Ministry of Health has reported three cases of Red Eye Disease in Nairobi, with an additional case in Kisii, according to Public Health Director General Patrick Amoth.
Amoth explained that the disease, likely caused by the Adenovirus, presents with watery red eyes and has been observed in the coastal regions of Kenya, including Mombasa, Malindi, and Lamu.
While assuring the public that the disease is typically self-limiting and rarely leads to long-term complications, Amoth urged caution. He emphasized that individuals experiencing severe symptoms such as redness, discharge, swelling, and bleeding should seek urgent medical attention.
In the wake of 869 reported cases in Tanzania, particularly in Dar es Salaam, the Ministry of Health in Kenya is advising citizens to take preventive measures. Amoth highlighted the importance of avoiding eye contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces and encouraged frequent handwashing.
“The general public has been advised on measures to take to avoid contamination; wash your hands frequently and keep your hands off the face,” he stated. Additionally, he cautioned against sharing towels with family members who may be affected.
As health authorities monitor the situation closely, Kenyans are urged to stay vigilant and seek medical attention promptly if experiencing severe symptoms. The Ministry of Health aims to curb the spread of the disease by promoting awareness and preventive measures within the community.
