Why Family of Kiptum’s Coach Has Rejected Postmortem Results

The family of the late Kelvin Kiptum’s coach, Gervais Hakizimana, expressed their dissatisfaction with the autopsy results released on February 16. They spoke to the media, highlighting discrepancies between the initial observations of Hakizimana’s body and the findings of the autopsy report.

Sandrine, Hakizimana’s niece, stated that the injuries described in the autopsy report, including fractures, were not evident when they first saw the body. As a result, they disputed the accuracy of the report and called for further investigation by the Kenyan government into the circumstances of Hakizimana’s death.

The autopsy, conducted by pathologist Dr. Benson Macharia, concluded that Hakizimana died from inter-cranial bleeding resulting from a head injury, consistent with the police report on the car accident. The report also noted fractures in the neck and head, aligning with the details of the accident.

Hakizimana’s body is slated to be flown to Rwanda for burial, while Kelvin Kiptum, the late athlete, is set to receive a hero’s burial funded by President William Ruto’s administration. Ruto has also directed his government officials to construct a three-bedroom house for Kiptum ahead of his burial.

The family’s rejection of the postmortem results underscores the need for transparency and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Hakizimana’s death, ensuring that justice and clarity prevail.
