Johansen Oduor speaks about his pathology journey.

The chief government pathologist, Johansen Oduor revealed he was interested in pursuing a career in the medical field but was not interested in postmortem because there is prejudice from people who fear such professionals.

“I didn’t want to do a postmortem because there is a lot of discrimination and people are afraid of us”.

He continued to explain he told his father that he wanted to become a doctor to help the community but his father was surprised because he wanted him to become a teacher.

In an interview with Fridah Mwaka on Saturday, the pathologist explained when he finished university and graduated, the Ministry of Health placed him in the City Mortuary

“After I finished university, the Ministry of Health put me in City Mortuary. It was my first time going there and I was very scared. But I looked at the dead bodies and they were people from Kibera and Mathare, where I came from. I said now if I escape these who will help them??”. Oduor explained.

He continued to say the work of pathology has many controversies and people point fingers at each other so he was wondering if he would be able to deal with it but he remembered he had an interest of helping the community especially those from humble background.

He revealed he loves music so when he is not doing surgery, he listens to music and also has a talent in singing.

“I like music a lot and I can also sing. When I was in University I used to rap in competitions.” I also like watching movies a lot. There is no new movie that is released and I don’t watch it”.

He disclosed he has a family. Three children and the first born is 21 years old.

He also congratulated his father because he believed in him so much that even when he had lost hope, his father was always there to encourage him.

His mother and his professors also helped him in his journey.

During the interview it was known he was born in 1974 and grew up in Mathare, later he went to the University of Nairobi where he was awarded a first degree in medicine and surgery. He later did a master’s in pathology.
