Kwale County Official and Siblings Arrested Over Alleged Ksh48.9M Graft Case

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has confirmed the arrest of five individuals from Kwale County on suspicions of graft.

According to EACC, Vincent Mbito, the county’s treasury head, along with his four brothers, has been apprehended in connection with a corruption scandal involving Ksh48.9 million of public funds in the county.

EACC’s statement mentioned the involvement of the brothers, identified as Vincent Chirima Mbito (County Treasury Head), Mongo Mbito Mongo (County Revenue Officer), Hassan Shilingi Mbito (Driver, Kwale Water and Sewerage Company Limited), Mwaiwe Mongo Mbito (County Procurement Officer), and Chindoro Mongo Mbito (employed by the National Government). They are alleged to have utilized their family-owned companies to conduct fraudulent dealings with the county administration. They are now set to face charges in court.

“EACC has outlined charges against them related to 10 contracts awarded to companies Rome Investments and Chilongola Limited, resulting in inflated payments of Kes. 44,919,341 and Kes 4,007,943 respectively. The total amount was distributed among the suspects,” EACC reported.

These contracts were purportedly for the supply and delivery of sanitation materials, food, general office supplies, and institutional appliances.

The arrested individuals have been transferred from Mombasa Central Police Station to the Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court for legal proceedings.
