John Ikechukwu Okafor, famously known as Mr. Ibu, departed over the weekend at the age of 62, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and entertainment.
Mr. Ibu was a prolific figure in Nigerian cinema, gracing over 200 Nollywood films, notably the beloved Mr. Ibu series.
His journey to stardom began in humble circumstances after the loss of his father, leading him to undertake various odd jobs in Sapele to support his family and education.
Despite financial challenges, he pursued education at the College of Education, Yola, and later at the Institute of Management and Technology.
Throughout his illustrious career, Mr. Ibu brought joy to audiences with his memorable performances in films like Mr. Ibu (2004), Mr. Ibu 2 (2005), and numerous others.
He was also known for his outspoken views, particularly on issues such as homosexuality in Nollywood, where he advocated against it vehemently.
In October 2023, Mr. Ibu revealed health struggles, culminating in the amputation of one of his legs in November of the same year.
Tragically, he passed away on March 2, 2024, at Evercare Hospital in Lagos, following a cardiac arrest.
Before his acting career, Mr. Ibu explored various paths, including boxing, football coaching, and karate.
In his personal life, he was married twice and had over 10 children, facing family challenges including legal issues involving his son Daniel and adopted daughter Jasmine.
Despite the controversies, Mr. Ibu’s legacy as a beloved entertainer and cultural icon will endure, remembered fondly by millions around the world.
