On Thursday, law enforcement officers arrested seven individuals, among them renowned human rights activist Boniface Mwangi, as they led a protest march demanding justice for victims of police violence during recent demonstrations, according to reports from Haki Africa.
Among those detained is Caroline Nduku Mutisya, the mother of Ericson Mutisya, who tragically lost his life at the hands of police during the protests.
Additionally, two relatives of Evans Kiratu, who succumbed to injuries inflicted by a tear gas canister during the same protests, were also apprehended.
Social media personality Shadrack Kiprono, widely recognized as Shad Khalif, was taken into custody at the Java Kimathi Street location.
The demonstration, led by Mr. Mwangi, saw participants carrying a coffin and crosses as a tribute to those who perished during the Gen Z protests, which called for governmental reform.
The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has condemned the arrest of Mr. Mwangi and other activists, demanding their immediate release.
“Free Boniface Mwangi and Hussein Khalid. We will continue to demand accountability for the officers responsible for the deaths of innocent Kenyans,” KHRC asserted in a post on its X account.
Prior to his arrest, Boniface had announced the meeting point for the demonstration on his X account, inviting supporters to gather at Kimathi Street at 11 AM.
He encouraged attendees to accompany the families of the deceased to the locations where the tragic events occurred, to honor their memory with flowers.
In his post, he also criticized political leader Raila Odinga, urging followers to label him a traitor for allegedly betraying the Kenyan people and joining the government.
