Kenyan runner Sheila Chepkirui triumphed in her New York Marathon debut, clocking 2:24:35 to secure the women’s title. Last year’s champion, Hellen Obiri, finished close behind, just 14 seconds adrift, while Vivian Cheruiyot claimed third, rounding off a historic all-Kenyan podium with a time of 2:25:21.

Chepkirui, who set a personal best of 2:17:29 in Valencia last year, ran a tactically sharp race on New York’s challenging course. She and Obiri worked together in the latter stages, taking charge of the lead group after Ethiopia’s Senbere Teferi faded past the 30km mark.

In the men’s race, Dutch runner Abdi Nageeye narrowly edged Kenya’s Evans Chebet, finishing in 2:07:39, with Chebet just six seconds behind. Kenyan runner Albert Korir completed the men’s podium in 2:08:00. Notably, two-time winner Geoffrey Kamworor finished fifth, while last year’s champion, Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola, placed fourth.

Chepkirui’s impressive debut and tactical prowess on a tough course highlight Kenya’s continued dominance in distance running, underscored by an all-Kenyan podium. For Obiri, it was a strong attempt to defend her title, following her 2023 dual wins in Boston and New York.
